Raw you have a LGA775 socket so its core 2 and core2 quads only for you. You cant fit a any thing other than a LGA775 chip in there
and then its only what you M/B supports in its Bios.
i3 and i5 / some i7's are socket LG1156
The full fat i7's are on LG 1366 and triple channel DDR3, which makes it all a bit pricey lol but nothing is faster.

What chip you got in it at the momment RAW ?
The X48 was a high end chip set when it came out made for overclocking by the way.
If you have DDR3 ram an i5 750 & M/B upgrade would only cost you around £250 or less and this chip will run rings round any core chip.

as gazzer says:

Raw you have a LGA775 socket so its core 2 and core2 quads only for you. You cant fit a any thing other than a LGA775 chip in there

if u want anything like i3/i5 or i7 then u need  LG1156  or  LG 1366 mobo which is gunna cost

the best and cheapest ive seen for ur mobo would be this Q9650:
 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Q9650-3-GHz-1333mhz-12mb-cache-boxed_W0QQitemZ270538334886QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=52158c8a1270a0e201e196b1fff6bebb

or this Q9550:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Q9550-2.83GHz-CPU-Processor-1333MHz_W0QQitemZ320488777859QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=52158c8a1270a0e201e196b1fff6bebb

otherwise your looking at like £250 ish like gaz said for the i5 setup altho the 2 chips i just mentioned do come higher in the cpu benchmark table at stock speeds,  (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html)   dunno bout overclocked :S ? tomayto - tomato lol

At the end of the day you are not going to see a huge diffrence if you up grade on your current M/B.
not £200 worth any way more like £50 worth and that will take your £200 to get.
Unless you are doing video/ and stuff that needs 4 cores that is even then go for the cheapst quad.
you should be able to clock your E6300 to 3.5 Gig I would expect, if not nearly 4 with the right cooler / case  ect.
I would over clock what you have got and save your money towards an i5 or i7 set up which would be a much better
investment.
Hell even bin the monitor up grade and put it all in to this sort of set up.
